About Me

My name is Lisa Tromley (née Rogers).  I was born in the small town of Bethel, Vermont and grew up on a dairy farm.  My family moved to Florida when I was 11.  I have a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Central Florida (UCF).  I’ve always wanted to teach, but originally had intend to be a professor and teach anthropology.  I came to realize that professors in anthropology were usually more about research and writing while teaching was secondary.  I decided that I really wanted to teach without the pressure of publish or perish.  So I quit working on my M.A. in Anthropology at the University of Florida.  Currently, I am working on a Master's degree in Curriculum & Instruction at UCF as well as graduate certificates in gifted education and TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages).  I plan to graduate from the MA program in Spring 2011 and begin teaching secondary social sciences (6-12).  For right now, I'm going to school and tutoring elementary age children through the Title I SES program.  I currently live in Belleview, Florida with my husband, two dogs, and four cats.

I believe my primary responsibility as a teacher is to not simply disseminate knowledge about my subject matter, but to give my students the skills necessary to master any subject.  I don’t believe that any one reform will solve the problem in education.  I think improving the education system will require a combination of proven reforms created by educators not politicians.
I really like technology and experiment with new tech so I definitely intend to integrate technology in my curriculum.  However, I don't want to just throw technology in as much as possible and hope it works.  I want to integrate technology in a way that will be useful to students in developing the skills they will need for not just their careers, but life.
I started this blog as part of a course on integrating technology, but intend to continue blogging when the course is done.  My interests are very diverse so my blog will likely reflect that, but all of the topics will be related to education in some form.  You can also find me on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/ltromley
