Activity Reflection #4: Prezi on digital storytelling

The activity this week was to create a presentation using Prezi about digital storytelling and how it might benefit my students.  I’ve never used Prezi before so this was a new experience for me.  It was still pretty easy.  I just went into the software and started trying things out.  It kind of reminded me of the class I took over the summer on creativity in gifted education.  I had to create a poster with words from the semester and make it look cool.  I really like Prezi and found it easy to use.  The presentation I made for this was pretty simple, but I think if I were to use it for presentations to my class then I would add in more detail like audio or video.

I think my students will love using Prezi.  A lot of kids are tired of boring old PowerPoint so this will be a welcome change from the traditional presentation format.  You can still integrate images, video, and audio so kids still gain those skills.  Creating this kind of presentation will improve my students’ ability to find, evaluate, and synthesize information into a coherent product as well as improving their communication skills.

  1. Lisa,

I really like your presentation!! I have never heard of Prezi until this module, and it seems to be a pretty interesting program. This seems like it would be a great program to use with our students in creating graphic organizers doesn't it? Do you plan on using this technology in your classroom? I agree that using these technologies is a great way to change things up for our students, keeping them better engaged in the learning activities. It is also a great way for them to explore multiple forms of technology such as graphics, video and audio.

I had thought of a prezi as a way to improve their skills in finding information, but I hadn't thought of it also improving their communication skills. Thanks for thinking of that. Know that I think of it, I can see how the students being proud of a project like this would make them more comfortable in front of the class and the teacher. This would for sure help their communication skills.
I also like how you talked about integrating videos and audio into these presentations. I am not sure all students know how to do this, and having the students create a prezi would be a way that I think they would enjoy finding out how this works. It will also teach them how to search for good websites, that have helpful videos and pictures, and not just any kind of website.

  3. Lisa,

I really enjoyed your Prezi. It is well-organized and I love the images you added! I appreicate how you took the main concepts of digital storytelling and made them the focus of your Prezi. You provided a lot of very useful information!

I would love to use Prezi as a tool in my classroom, as well as a tool for me to present new topics to my students. You mentioned adding audio to your Prezi for use in your classroom. What a great idea! How do you add audio to a Prezi? That would make it even more appealing to the audience and more fun for students (and me) to present information!

  4. Alyssa,
There are instructions for inserting sound on the prezi website. Here's the link: http://prezi.com/learn/insert-sound/

  5. Your presentation was short and straight-forward. I liked it. You summed up digital storytelling really well. I like that you feel that it will give your students a voice if they were to use Prezi. Too often our student do not get the opportunity to use their voice in school. It would be really awesome if we are able to integrate audio and video into Prezi. I'm going to need to look into that.

Prezi was new to me as well. It sounds like you didn't go through any of the tutorials like I did. If that is the case, I am not as brave about jumping into new software as you are. Bravo to you!

  6. Thanks so much for introducing me to that Steinbeck quote that you embedded via photo!

    What a great truism!
